Q: What are the benefits of composting?
A: Composting helps the soil to retain water, which is very important in this dry area. Composting helps reduce the use of non-organic fertilizer & soil amendments while helping companies & communities lower their greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).
Composting reduces landfill waste; an alarming amount of paper and cardboard recycling actually ends up in landfills due to contamination. You may think you are contributing to the environment by recycling with your municipality. However, from whatever clean cardboard is not discarded at landfills about 90% is baled and shipped overseas to other countries! This is actually pushing off our pollution instead of benefiting from its potential. The company we use to dispose of our organics, Spa Hills Farms, has spent years gathering this product and has the Armstrong, BC facility to correctly process and break down the material into a safe organic chemical-free fertilizer. This then benefits our local Okanagan farmers’ fields and agriculture. Approximately 80 tons a day of organic materials, including cardboard and paper are kept out of landfills and used on local fields! Q: What are the benefits of recycling?
A: Most people are already aware of the benefits of recycling; it’s a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and help save the earth. But did you know that recycling can also be earth-friendly? recycling helps to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and it also cuts down on the need for new materials. Q: Where can I purchase Certified Compostable bags?
A: We recommend using EcoSafe bags which display the BPI logo, meaning they are Certified Compostable Plastic. This is what we look for when determining if your product will properly break down in the composting process. Look for this when purchasing any composable plastics or other materials.
Biodegradable is not compostable!
You can currently purchase any size compostable bags directly through us, including ones that fit to line your 65 gallon tote. Smaller 9-50L bags can also be found at Farm Bound Home Delivery in Vernon. They sell them on their website, and at their location on Middleton Mountain in Vernon. You can also pick these bags up at Buy-Low Foods in the Okanagan Landing Plaza in Vernon, Eat Good Market on 27th Ave in Vernon, Nature’s Fare Markets in Vernon, or at No Frills in Salmon Arm. You can also find the large bags that line your tote itself (size 45X60) currently at the Polson Park Plaza Re-Fill store in Vernon. So long as the bags you are using are certified compostable, they are considered acceptable.

Q: Will my organics bin start to smell bad?
A: No more than your regular garbage, and less if you layer in between the food scraps, shredded newspaper, cardboard, wood stir sticks, napkins and other woody, carbon-based items. We recommend that you try to keep your tote in the shade if possible, it helps to keep the product cooler and also to keep the lids closed when not in use. This eliminates the flies that tend to invade and lay their eggs. We can also supply a lock for the bins so animals or people cannot get into them and make a mess or cause problems. Compostable Bags also help A LOT, and we strongly encourage you to use them. Lining your bin with a compostable bag keeps your tote clean with every tip (make sure to loosen the bag from the sides of your bin and tie it up before it’s tipped). Use smaller compostable bags to seal any raw food/meat, this will also help reducing smells that attract flies. People have also kept raw meat or bagged food waste in their freezer until pickup day, this helps if you have more than average that particular week.

Q: Where do you take the compost you collect?
A: We take the compost to Spa Hills Compost in Salmon Arm. On their website you can find more information about their company and environmental goals such as: “At Spa Hills Farm our mission is to create the final link in the chain to a full-circle, green waste-reduction solution for our economy and our local North Okanagan/Shuswap community. We do this by collecting food waste and other organic material from businesses and homes, that would otherwise go to a landfill and make chemical-free fertilizer from it. We use it for the land we farm, where we grow wheat, corn and other crops to feed to our livestock. We also sell the finished compost to many of our local farmers here in the Valley.”

Q: Can I take my compost to another North Okanagan facility for disposal?
A: The RDNO (Regional District of North Okanagan) does not accept food scraps for composting at its facilities and does not provide curbside organics collection. This is why we offer compost collection, as this service is needed in the following areas: Armstrong, Enderby, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Coldstream and Lumby.
